On Friday 28 March 2025, from 9:30 a.m., the Department of International, Legal and Historical-Political Studies of the University of Milan will host the International Workshop “Migrazioni e violenze di frontiera. Pratiche del ricordo e dell’oblio attraverso il Mediterraneo/Migrations et violences frontalières: Pratiques de mémoire et d’oubli à travers la Méditerranée“.
The event will be an important opportunity for discussion and collective reflection on the processes of construction of public and collective memory of contemporary migrations through the stories of those who have crossed the Mediterranean. We will discuss traumatic memory and forms of forgetting, listening to and re-elaborating denied mourning, and artistic practices that contribute to the construction of a public memory of these slaughters. We will also address public mobilisations and legal support for the victims‘ families’ demands for truth and justice. The seminar is accompanied by Silvia Di Meo’s photographic exhibition entitled “La Mèr(e) Méditerranée: presences and resistances against the border regime“. The event is promoted in the framework of the research activities carried out by the research group coordinated by Professor Monica Massari (University of Milan) in the following projects: MOBS (PRIN 2020); Tramigrart (PRIN 2022); Memodias (Horizon-MSCA-202); Ithaca (Horizon 2020); Interdiasporic memories and international solidarity (PSR 2022).

The workshop “Social Research and Artistic Practices: Critical Views on Languages, Methods and Forms of Knowledge Production” held at the University of Milan on 15 March 2024 intended to weave a dialogue between researchers and artists involved from different perspectives and professional practices in that border zone between art and social research, questioning complex social issues at the core center of a number of research projects promoted by our research group based at the Department of International Legal and Historical-Political Studies on migration, diaspora, memory and borders. These projects propose collaborative models of knowledge production that attempt to overcome traditional dichotomies between theoretical and practical forms of knowledge and are inspired by a deep public vocation.
Speakers: Monica Massari (University of Milan), Gianluca Gatta (University of Milan, The New School), Alessandra Cianelli (artist and researcher), Opher Thomson (writer and videomaker), Alexandra D’Onofrio (University of Manchester), Costanza Meli (art historian and curator, ISOLE Association), Maria Nadotti (journalist and writer), Barbara Spadaro (University of Liverpool), Anna Lisa Tota (University of Roma Tre).
