Zakaria Mohamed Ali
Zakaria Mohamed Ali is a freelance journalist and filmmaker, deputy chair of the Archive of Migrant memories in Rome. In Somalia, he portrayed the lives of the youth in his city through radio and the weekly publication Haqabtiraha Caashaqa. Since 2009, Zakaria has been actively involved in the field of reception and inclusion, working in various reception centers. He currently serves as a Somali language interpreter and intercultural mediator. Since 2011, he has collaborated with the editorial team of Piuculture and, in the same year, joined the Archive of migrant memories in Rome through the project Benvenuti in Italia. In his documentaries, he shares his life and the experiences of those who, like him, have had to leave their homeland. In 2012, he produced the short film To Whom It May Concern, a documentary that recounts his return to Lampedusa through the reading of his diary. This work offers an opportunity to reflect on his time in the CIE and evokes lost memories. The documentary was selected for the House of European History Exhibit in Brussels. His filmography includes L’attesa, a documentary made during the activities of the Benvenuti in Italia project, and Il calciatore somalo (Dadir). Between 2014 and 2015, he participated in the film Lampedusa by Peter Schreiner and produced the documentary Il signore di Mogadiscio (The Man from Mogadishu). Additionally, he worked as a camera assistant, lighting technician, and technical support on Schreiner’s film Garten (Garden). He began a collaboration with Schreiner, taking on the role of artistic director in the film TAGE (DAYS). Currently, Zakaria is engaged in an artistic elaboration of his work, aimed at combining storytelling, documentation, and experimentation.
